Alaska : Whooping Cough / Pertussis Cases on The Rise in Alaska
Recent health news reports on whooping cough cases in Alaska:
- Medpage Today Report on Whooping Cough Outbreak in Alaska on 08/31/2005: The incidence of pertussis is four times higher in the state this year than in 2004, including a rise among adults, although improved diagnostic specificity may explain some of it.
State health officials here reported 46 cases of pertussis since Jan. 1 through Aug. 24 of this year. Eighteen cases are from the Kenai Peninsula, 10 from Anchorage, two from Wasilla, four from Delta Junction, one from Fairbanks and one from Klawock.
In 2004, there were only a total of 11 cases of whooping cough reported in the entire state...
Preliminary data from the CDC also show cases of pertussis are rising. There were 11,647 cases in 2003. That figure jumped to 18,957 cases in 2004. New cases occurring among adults and teens exceeded the number of cases in infants...
