GAMMAGARD LIQUID / Immune Globulin Intravenous (Human) IVIG Now Available in USA for the Treatment of Primary Immunodeficiencies

Baxter Healthcare Corporation has recently announced the availability of their GAMMAGARD LIQUID (IVIG) 10% Solution for the treatment of primary immunodeficiencies to patients in the United States. The company is to restrict the use of its current product GAMMAGARD S/D to only those patients that require a low Immunoglobulin A (IgA) therapy.

Primary immunodeficiency disorders category includes well over one hundred diseases (including a host of opportunistic pulmonary disorders) caused by an immune system that is compromised. Currently well over 50k individuals are estimated to have a form of primary immunodeficiency disorders in the United States of America alone.

Immune Globulin Intravenous (Human) (IVIG) therapies are designed to help restore the IgG levels to near normal levels. In doing so, IVIG therapy helps Immunodeficient patients bolster their immune systems so as to not only prevent opportunistic infections, but also to fight them better should they occur.

It must be noted that GAMMAGARD LIQUID is contraindicated in patients that are known to have anaphylactic or severe hypersensitivity responses to Immune Globulin products derived from human plasma -especially the patients with severe selective IgA deficiency (IgA < 0.05 g/L). IVIG products have been know to cause renal dysfunction, acute renal failure, osmotic nephrosis, and death. GAMMAGARD LIQUID is made from human plasma. Considering that IVIG products are made from human plasma, they carry the inherent risk of transmitting infectious agents, such as viruses, and other pathogens.
