New Human Bocavirus Linked to Many Lower Respiratory Infections in Children - New Discovery by Scientists at Karolinska Institute, Sweden.
The newly discovered human bocavirus virus is known to cause a host of respiratory tract infections in children. Even though the viral respiratory tract infections of the lower respiratory tract are a leading cause of hospitalization of children, currently no more than 20% cases of such lower respiratory infections are actually being traced back to a known virus.
The human bocavirus was identified by a team of researchers led by Swedish researchers Dr. Allander and Dr. Björn Andersson using a new virus discovery method that now makes it possible to systematically scan samples for unknown viruses. The researchers are hopeful that their new virus identification technique will enable the discovery of many more viruses.
Dr. Allander is a scientist at KI’s Centre for Molecular Medicine and Department of Clinical Microbiology at Karolinska University Hospital. Dr. Andersson is an associate professor at KI’s Centre for Genomics and Bioinformatics.
