Telephone Call Center Workers Have a Greater Risk of Developing Laryngeal Cancer -Especially Those That Smoke.
At a recent press conference, the Officers of the Philippine Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (PSOHNS) urged people -especially those that work at a Call Center -to promptly consult with an ENT specialist if they have persistent hoarseness, have a lump in the throat, experience difficulty in swallowing, breathing difficulties, or see traces of blood in their cough.
With the recent boom in Call Center industry in Philippine, people that work at call centers usually have to be on the telephone and talk for many hours at a time. As a result, call center employees are likely to develop dry throat, and a hoarse voice. Currently, there are an estimated 1,700+ new cases of laryngeal cancer each year in Philippine alone -of which well over 1,000+ lives are being lost due to laryngeal cancer annually.
Smoking (including exposure to passive/secondhand or environmental smoke) is known to further increases the risks that a call center worker would develop laryngeal cancer.
