Undiagnosed Diffuse Alveolar Diseases Could Cause Serious Complications for Bone Marrow Transplant Patients
A recent report published by the researchers at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine shows that undiagnosed respiratory complications are responsible for many (a majority of) fatalities in bone marrow transplant patients.
Autopsy results of 71 bone marrow transplant recipients reviewed by Dr. Afessa and colleagues showed that nearly 90% of autopsies showed signs of underlying pulmonary complications.
While bacterial bronchopneumonia was the most common infectious pulmonary diseases, diffuse alveolar disease was found to be the most common noninfectious pulmonary complication.
