Teens that Abuse Asthma Inhalers are Seven Times More Likely To Abuse Drugs : University of Michigan Study Reports
U-M Researchers have found that the kids that do not mind misusing inhalers themselves or those that allow others to abuse their asthma inhalers are significantly more likely to use illegal drugs and alcohol than those that do not participate in asthma inhalers abuse of any kind. Inhaler abuse was found to be directly correlated with tobacco use, alcohol use, binge drinking and use of illicit drugs.
These findings by U-M researchers seem to endorse the common belief that those that give in easily and experiment abusing asthma inhalers themselves, or those that do not mind passing them around among their friends probably lack the mindset that would make someone think twice when it comes to experimenting with substance abuse. The researchers seem to suggest that it is probably boils down to one's comfort level when it comes to breaking the rules and using other people's drugs.
The study also found that the teens that borrow, buy or steal an inhaler prescribed to someone else are 10 times more likely to use illicit drugs, nearly 8 times more likely to drink and about 3.5 times more likely to report binge drinking within the two weeks prior to the survey.
