Australia bans Asbestos, begins Asbestos-free future
December 31, 2003
Australia begins the year 2004 with a complete ban on Asbestos.
Hundreds of Australians die annually from asbestosis and mesothelioma, and becuase of cancer caused by exposure to Asbestos. Australia has the world's highest rate of mesothelioma due to extensive use of asbestos in previous decades.
Eventhough asbestos was banned in the workplace in 2001, the Australian Government allowed three years for phasing out Asbestos products.
Effective December, 31, 2003, any use, storage, and selling of any products containing asbestos (including automotive brake pads & gaskets) is prohibited. Imports and exports of products containing asbestos are also now banned, with only very limited exceptions.
The new law does not require immediate removal of Asbestos products and materials already in place. However, when they are replaced, non-asbestos alternatives must now be used.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause: asbestosis, pleural plaque, scarring of lung tissue; Mesothelioma and lung cancer.
