Platelike Atelectasis: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment, Cures and Remedies for Platelike Atelectasis, Discoid Atelectasis, Linear Atelectasis, or Subsegmental Atelectasis.

Platelike Atelectasis is also known as Discoid Atelectasis, Linear Atelectasis, or Subsegmental Atelectasis. It was initially documented by Fleischner. It often occurs as a postoperative complication of thoracic and/or abdominal surgery. Fleischner's lines (Platelike Atelectasis) are usually found lying transversely at the base of the lungs, and are often only a few millimeter wide and several centimeters long.

Platelike atelectasis (also sometimes known as Disk atelectasis) denotes collapsed areas of the lung that seem to have a linear or horizontal ("platelike" opacities or silhouette signs) appearance. When viewed from the side, they often look like a CD disk or a dinner plate.

Platelike/Discoid atelectasis is often thought to be caused by shallow breathing and hypoventilation. Plate-like atelectasis is a characteristic radiographic finding which resembles the side-view of a dinner plate.

Platelike Atelectasis Signs and Symptoms:

Symptoms observed during the physical examination usually include dullness to percussion, and diminished breathing sounds over the affected area. Reduced chest excursion can also be noted in the affected area.

Platelike Atelectasis Diagnosis:

Diagnosis of Platelike Atelectasis involves: arterial blood gas evaluation, rales, evidence of platelike densities in Chest x-rays and Chest CT scans, volume loss, as well as Flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy.

Treatment, Cures and Remedies for Platelike Atelectasis:

Platelike atelectasis is usually not serious if recognized and treated in a timely manner. Actually, there is no significant difference in the treatment of plate-like atelectasis (versus other types of atelectasis) considering the fact that this term has primarily been coined by and made polupar by the radiologists who like to use this term.

Platelike Atelectasis Prognosis:

Just like most other forms of atelectasis, some Platelike Atelectasis patients may also develop respiratory complications such as Acute pneumonia, Bronchiectasis, Empyema, Hypoxemia, Pleural effusion, and Respiratory failure.
