While there are several hundred virii that cause common cold, Rhinoviruses are known to cause more than one-half of colds.   • Coronaviruses Coronaviruses are known to cause colds during the winter and the early spring months.
  • Adenoviruses, Coxsackieviruses, Echoviruses, Enteroviruses, Paramyxoviruses, and Respiratory syncytial virus are also known to cause common cold.
  • Allergy disorders, Menstrual cycle, and Stress are known to make a person more susceptibile to common cold.
  • Cold weather - There is no evidence that exposure to cold weather causes common cold.

Common Cold Symptoms:

Common cold symptoms include: Fever, Headache, Coughing, Hoarseness, Sneezing, Sore throat, Nasal discharge, Nasal congestion, Swelling of the sinus membranes, Chills, and Fatigue.

Is Common Cold an Infectious Disease?

Yes. Common cold virus usually spreads through close contact, including the following:

  • Inhaling infectious respiratory secretions released in air by an infected person while sneezing or coughing,
  • Touching respiratory secretions of an infected person and then touching one's own eyes, the mouth or the nose.

How to Prevent the Common Cold Virii from Spreading?

Avoiding close contact with infected persona is the most effective way to prevent cold. Good personal hygine, handwashing with soap, and making frequent use of disinfectants also helps curtail the spread of common cold infection.

Are there Any Treatments or Remedies that Cure Common Cold?

No, there is no cure for Common Cold -only a few medicines for symptomatic relief are curently available. Usually plenty of bed rest, regular intake of fluids, and occassionally a pill for relieving headache or fever may be prescribed.
