Hantavirus - Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment, Cures and Remedies for Hanta virus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS)

Hantavirus causes Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a form of adult respiratory disease syndrome. HPS was first reported in the United States in 1993. Between the Spring of 1993 and November 2003, over 350 HPS cases have been reported in the U.S.A.

Signs and symptoms of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome:

Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) symptoms -listed below -usually begin within one to three weeks after being exposed to Hantavirus.

The common Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome symptoms include:

  • Chills,
  • Vomiting,
  • Abdominal pain,
  • Fever,
  • Severe Muscle aches (especially thighs, hips, back and the shoulder),
  • Respiratory distress and shortness of breath.

Where is Hanta virus usually found?

The deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) is the main carrier of hantavirus.

What does the Deer Mouse look like?

The adult deer mouse is approximately six inches long. It is grayish to light brown colored on top, with a white belly, large ears, and a furry tail. In comparison, the common house mouse (Mus musculus) is grayish to light brown entirely (not white on the belly), and has scales clearly visible on its tail.

How is a person exposed to Hantavirus?

Deer mice shed the virus in their urine, saliva, and droppings. A person may be exposed to airborne hantavirus by breathing-in dust after cleaning rodent droppings or disturbing nests, or by living or working in rodent-infested surroundings.

Can Hantavirus be trasnmitted by another person or animal?

No, there are no cases in the U.S. of the disease being spread from one person to another, or from pets, domestic animals, etc. to humans.
