Lung Cancer Vaccine, Lung Cancer Research
GVAX -an experimental lung cancer vaccine being developed at Baylor University shows promising results. In some cases, it was shown to wiped out lung cancer, and in some patients it was effective in slowing down spread of lung cancer.
A recent lung cancer research study shows that in the case of three patients injected with the GVAX vaccine there was no recurrence of lung cancer for more than three years following vaccination. The study included 43 people with non small cell lung cancer -one of the the most common form of lung cancer. Out of the 43 lung cancer patients included in this study, 10 patients were in early stage of lung cancer and 33 were in the advanced stage lung cancer. All 43 patients were injected with the vaccine every two weeks for three months, and followed up for three years.
The GVAX vaccine -developed by researchers at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas and partially funded by CellGenesis, a pharmaceutical company - is still years away from reaching the market. The reasearchers are still years away from seeking an approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
"The results are very promising for patients with non-small (cell) lung cancer, which is frequently resistant to chemotherapy," said Dr. John Nemunaitis, a Baylor oncologist who led the study. "The most exciting thing is in those who responded to the vaccine, it was complete. It's given us a lot of encouragement," Dr. Nemunaitis said. Dr. Anwar Khurshid, an oncologist at the Arlington Cancer Center, said the findings will "open a lot of avenues. I think you'll cure some patients but not everyone. That's what has been proven in other cases," he said.
Non-small cell lung cancer is one of leading cause of cancer death -resulting in over 150,000 causalties per annum in US alone. Traditional treatment options for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (a smoking related lung disease) include surgical removal of the cancer tumor, lung cancer chemotherapy or both.
