Asbestos and Health : Information on Asbestos Related Health Risks.

Asbestos mainly affects the lungs and the pleural membrane that surrounds the lungs, often resulting in asbestos lung cancer. However, it is also known top cause of cancer in other organs.

Breathing in high levels of asbestos fibers for a long time is likely to result in scar-like tissues in the lungs and in the pleural membrane (lining) that surrounds the lung. There are some that argue that breathing in even a single strand of asbestos fibre -which are often microscopic -can cause lung cancer.

This asbestos disease is called Asbestosis, and it is usually found in workers exposed to asbestos, but not in the general public. It also known to occur in some workers family members and others that come in close contact with the asbestos dust carried home on workers' clothes and in their hair. People with asbestosis show distinct asbestosis symptoms including difficulty in breathing, chronic cough, and in some cases cardiac complications resulting from heart enlargement, etc. Asbestosis is a serious lung disease and can eventually lead to disability, respiratory impairment, and loss of life.

Breathing lower levels of asbestos is also known to result in plaque build-up in the pleural membranes. Pleural plaques can occur in workers exposed to asbestos and sometimes in members of their families (due to asbestos dust carried home on workers clothes, etc.) as well as in people living in general vicinity of areas with high environmental levels of asbestos. Effects on breathing from pleural plaques alone are not usually serious, but higher exposure can lead to a thickening of the pleural membrane which can eventually restrict breathing. Cause and effect relation between asbestos and mesothelioma, as well as a host of other asbestos-related health risks/complications has been long established.
