Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), results from the malfunction of the lungs caused by injury of the small air sacs or alveoli, and the surrounding capillaries.
When this injury occurs, blood and fluid leak into the spaces between the air sacs, and eventually the blood and fluid enter into the air sacs themselves.
Fluid and blood in air sacks (alveoli) results in major breathing difficulties, as the name "Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome" suggests, Acute Respiratory Distress occurs.
ARDS develops secondary to any disease/event that directly or indirectly injures the lungs.
